On a rare visit to the Design Council website I came across a great article about the design process.
It describes the design process in a visual way, which is both immediately understandable, and pretty damned accurate. Whether or not this sort of design process is planned for within companies is another issue; every design problem which I've worked on in the past has naturally followed this kind of model. But what it does do is convey the message that design isn't just about eureka moments: it's about hard, purposeful work, towards a final, definable goal.
Some people will level criticism against this kind of model for being too scientific, and overly simplifying the 'genius' of the designer. But in my opinion, broadening access to design is important, because design is a proven method of dealing with all sorts of problems, whether they're social, or in the realm of industrial production. It's to the credit of the Design Council that they're at the forefront of promoting such methodologies.
